Finding the right source of protein that helps boost health and muscle mass, whilst increasing your energy levels is very important. When it comes to protein powders, there are 2 main sources… Whey or Soy. This raises a number of questions, such as: Is one better than the other? Which one should I choose?

What is soy protein?

Soy protein is a plant-based protein. As you can see from its name, this protein is derived from soy beans. These soy beans are processed and ultimately made into a powder. This is an interesting type of protein that has its fair share of benefits. For example, it can make it easier to manage cholesterol levels naturally, with amazing results.

On top of this, soy protein is absorbed very quickly by the body, which is why you should consider adding it to your smoothies or shakes. It’s also filled with amino acids and nutrients. With soy protein, you get quick and easy access calcium and a variety of amino acids that truly benefit your health, in the long run. Importantly, this type of protein is also lactose-free so if you are lactose intolerant, then this is a great source of protein for you.

The downside of soy protein is that it can sometimes lead to nausea, bloating and constipation. In some cases, it might even lead to itching, rashes and even breathing difficulties (if you have an soy allergy or intolerance). However, these are extreme cases and for the most part soy protein is a delight to use and people enjoy its great health benefits.

What is whey protein?

Whey protein is a type of animal-based protein and actually comes from dairy. Milk (often from cows) gets pasteurized and in doing so the separation of whey and casein occurs. Once this happens, the whey is processed even further in order to remove water, fat and carbs. The focus is on eliminating every additional compound in order to help produce pure whey protein.

Why should you consider adding whey protein to your diet? Whey is a great form of protein that you can use to boost athletic performance. Simply put, it can help boost muscle mass and strength, whilst also enhancing overall resistance. Some people also use whey protein to help with psoriasis and reduction of skin issues. Additionally, whey protein can be used as a way to lose weight naturally. Like soy protein, whey protein also contains lots of nutrients and it also features many helpful amino acids.

Does whey protein have any downsides? There are a few side effects that can sometimes arise when using whey protein including fatigue, headaches, nausea, reduced appetite, cramps and stomach pain. These are not too common but they can sometimes arise depending on the amount of whey protein that is consumed.

Which is the better option for you, whey protein or soy protein?

Needless to say, the fact that they both come from specific sources is what makes them very different and thus suitable to certain audiences. Soy protein is suitable for those that have a lactose intolerance or have a vegan/vegetarian diet. On the other hand, if you have no problem (ethically or medically) with dairy products and compounds, then whey protein can be a very good choice.

Whey protein has a few more amino acids compared to soy and it can help you boost strength and muscle mass in a more efficient way. On the other hand, soy has more natural phytonutrients and these can help prevent many different health problems.

Put simply, both of these are great! With whey protein being more suitable for those that want to work out and want to boost their athletic performance but if you’re vegan, soy protein can be a great replacement and it does provide incredible results!
